Some familiar faces will star in a special called "A New Age of Exploration National Geographic at 125," to premiere nationally at 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 11, on National Geographic Television.
Those faces include Sam Bhayani, MD, Washington University urologist and BJWCH chief medical officer, Brian Benway, Washington University urologist, Marsha Czech, CRNA, Leighann Schmidt, RN, da Vinci resource nurse, Raven Casey, scrub technician, and kidney cancer patient Mary White from Farmington, Mo.
They were filmed July 11 as they worked together on a partial nephrectomy with the da Vinci robot in the BJWCH operating room. Their footage will appear as part of the National Geographic Television special on advancements in medicine, space and other areas to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the National Geographic Society.
Barnes-Jewish Hospital has led the region in use of robotic surgical technology since 2007. BJWCH has been offering robotic surgery since 2010. Dr. Bhayani and his colleagues have pioneered use of the robot for kidney cancer surgery. We are so proud of the great work our surgical team performs every day, and are thrilled to see them recognized nationally.
