What to Expect

Here's what you can expect if you have an overnight appointment for a sleep study

Please read the following information carefully in order to assure the best test and treatment possible.

When you arrive at night

Night hours for the Sleep Disorders Center start at 8 p.m. When you arrive, the technologist will ask you to complete some paperwork and escort you to your private room. Please let our technologist know if you need to leave by a certain time in the morning.

The technologist will apply about 25 monitoring electrodes to your head and body, as well as other monitoring devices. These devices monitor: breathing, respiratory effort, snoring, oxygen level in the blood, brain electrical activity, electrical activity signaling eye movements, muscle electrical activity, and heart electrical activity. The electrodes are held in place with a paste that will require shampoo in the morning to remove. This entire preparation time for the test typically takes about 30-45 minutes. After that, you are free to read, watch TV, or just relax in your room until bedtime.

Concluding your test in the morning

The conclusion of your test depends on what we see during the night. Once your test has been completed the following morning, you will be free to leave about 30 minutes later. Private shower facilities are available for your use in the morning. Each private shower/rest room serves two patient rooms. If you must leave by a certain time, we will do our best to honor your schedule, but please allow sufficient time so we may make your test as thorough as possible. If you absolutely must leave by a certain time, please discuss this with us at 314.996.8680 before your test.

Cancellations

Please give 48 hours notice if unable to keep your appointment. This will allow us to serve others more promptly.
