The Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine has expanded its treatment programs with the addition of radiation therapy at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital. Washington University radiation oncologists now provide care at Siteman's west county facility, joining Washington University medical oncologists and surgeons who treat cancer patients on the hospital campus.
"We offer radiation oncologists who specialize in various types of cancer," says Imran Zoberi, MD, medical director of radiation oncology at Siteman's west county facility. "That means patients receive the best treatment regimen for their specific disease."
For example, Zoberi specializes in radiation therapy for breast cancer. He leads several clinical studies testing new ways of delivering treatment, with a goal of improving patient outcomes. Radiation therapy clinical studies will be available to patients in west county - in addition to studies already offered in the areas of medical oncology and surgery.
Siteman relocated its west county facility to expanded space in Medical Office Building 2 at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital in fall 2008. The new radiation therapy facility is in the same building, adjacent to physician offices for Siteman medical oncologists and surgeons, a chemotherapy treatment area and a large lobby with expansive seating and a resource center with brochures and other literature. This integrated setting makes it possible for patients to receive coordinated multidisciplinary care in one location.
Radiation therapy will be delivered by a recently installed Varian Clinac iX linear accelerator capable of providing image-guided treatment. A new CT scanner will be used for treatment planning. To make patients feel more comfortable, Bose CD players are available in treatment areas, and patients can bring their own CDs or select from a collection at the facility. Ceilings in treatment areas feature backlit art depicting green trees and clouds.
Radiation therapy patients also can take advantage of expanded support programs available at Siteman's west county facility. A weekly support group, caregiver group and movement class are available through a partnership with The Wellness Community of Greater St. Louis. Additional education and art programs will be held throughout the year
