“It’s not a life-saving surgery, but it’s a life-improving surgery.” That’s how Carolyn Whitmire describes the ankle replacement surgery performed by Dr. Gary Schmidt in 2008. It’s made all the difference in how she lives her life today.  

During the last six years, Dr. Schmidt has performed as many as 300 ankle replacements at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital.

14 Parkway seniors are in their second semester of the inaugural Pre-Professional Health Sciences Academy, an elective course that exposes high school seniors interested in health and biomedical careers to professionals working in the field. On June 13, the Parkway Board of Education approved an agreement between the district, BJC School Outreach and Youth Development and the Special School District to launch the course that combines classroom learning with job shadowing at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital.
