Husband’s Exceptional Care Convinces Wife to Have Surgery at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital

June 2015

For Cindy Lewin, it was the sense of family and teamwork she saw at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital that convinced her.

Her husband, Ben, received surgery at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital in December 2014. “What I witnessed as the family member was not only the high quality of patient care, but the staff interaction,” she says. “From the time we checked in for surgery through discharge, the team worked together with respect, kindness and willingness to help each other - working together in community with one another.”

At the end of her husband’s stay, Lewin told Sue Flood, RN, that because of how well the staff works together and cares about patients, that she wanted to schedule knee replacement surgery at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital. She had been in need of knee replacement surgery for a few years. ”I usually select a doctor first, but since I was selecting a hospital first, I did not know the orthopedic surgeons on staff and asked Sue if she could provide information for me to schedule an appointment,” Lewin says. “I met with Dr. Jeff Martin (orthopedic surgeon at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital) a few weeks later.”

Lewin had knee replacement surgery May 5. “I previously had minor outpatient procedures at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital, but this was my first time admitted for surgery,” she says. “My care, physical therapy, healing and recovery from knee surgery has been wonderful and I am excited about life without continuous joint pain.”

Lewin’s father in law, Jerry Lewin, served as a volunteer at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital for 17 years in the mail room. “He enjoyed every day of serving and retired a few years ago just prior to his death,” she says. “For him it was a privilege to give back to this hospital that had provided so much care over the years for him, his wife and the community.”

Recovery for both Lewins has gone well. Cindy Lewin plans to return to Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital in a few weeks to have her other knee replaced.

“Dr. Martin, the clinical and support staff at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital are outstanding,” Cindy Lewin says. “Everyone is remarkable in their professional interaction and team care, work ethic, support and respect for one another, and that reflects on the wonderful care provided. This sense of community carries over into our trust, sense of value and appreciation as patients.”
